Sustainability

Learning is also understanding the world we share.

This page has two planes. One is educational: how we want to help people understand climate change. The other is our responsibility: how we build Zapiens and which questions remain open.

Plane 1

Education to understand the climate

Why learning can include the world we share

Many decisions, personal and collective, depend on understanding our environment: what a greenhouse gas is, why sea levels rise, what adapting means.

That knowledge doesn't always stick after one reading. It means telling concepts apart, connecting causes and effects, and coming back to what wasn't clear. That's the kind of practice Zapiens wants to make easier.

Target 13.3

What target 13.3 calls for

Improving education, awareness and the capacity of people and institutions to mitigate climate change, adapt to it, reduce its impacts and warn early.

Official text (United Nations)

“Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.”

How we want to approach it with Zapiens

These are development possibilities, not announced programs.

  • Reviewed content

Climate lessons prepared from reliable sources and reviewed before they're shared.

  • Telling concepts and responses apart

Practice that helps separate mitigation from adaptation, causes from effects, and data from opinions.

  • Materials for teachers

A starting point for teachers and trainers who want to work on the topic with their group.

  • Educational collaborations

Working with organizations that already teach about climate, instead of starting from scratch.

What exists and what is still a line of work

Exists today

The platform. Anyone can turn a document about climate into a lesson and practice it eight ways. It's a general capability of Zapiens, the same as for any other topic.

Line of work

Our own reviewed climate content and materials. We haven't created them yet, and there are no announced courses, dates or partnerships.

Plane 2

How we build the project

The operational side is different from the educational one. There's little to boast about here and several open questions.

What we can describe

  • The website and the app run on cloud services; part of the work only runs when someone requests it.
  • Images on this site are optimized and served at sizes fitted to each screen.

Optimizing resources is good practice, not a measured climate result.

Open questions

  • How much energy does generating lessons with AI use, and how can we reduce it?
  • What do our cloud providers publish about their energy and emissions?
  • How do we measure the project's footprint before saying anything about it?

Educational intent is not measured environmental impact

Teaching about climate doesn't reduce emissions on its own, and being digital doesn't automatically make something sustainable. We don't claim carbon neutrality, avoided emissions or paper savings, because we haven't measured them. If we ever publish an environmental figure, it will come with its method.
